Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The holiday season can be especially challenging for families navigating a cancer diagnosis. Ann Smith, a chaplain at the UVA Health System’s oncology wing, joined Morning News to share insights on managing these difficulties with compassion and support.

Smith emphasized the importance of allowing space for emotions while encouraging individuals not to get stuck in them. “Take a deep breath and allow yourself time and space to feel the feelings that come along with difficult news like a new diagnosis,” she said. “Allow yourself to feel the feelings but not get stuck in them.”

With the holidays bringing increased social interaction, Smith suggested families plan conversations and traditions carefully, honoring each person’s comfort levels. “Sharing your experience can sometimes open up important avenues of support from surprising places,” she noted, adding that technology can help families stay connected when traditional gatherings aren’t possible.

Smith left listeners with advice for transitioning into the new year, encouraging families to build strong support systems. “Being just so kind and gentle with yourself as you navigate this new landscape, to be kind to yourself,” she said, emphasizing the importance of leaning on community resources like therapists and support groups.
