Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Governor Glenn Youngkin’s recent changes to the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors have sparked discussions about the broader implications for higher education governance and policy shifts. Lee Elberson, CEO of Clayborne Test Prep and Tutoring, weighed in on the potential effects, noting that “DEI initiatives is going to be under target,” and that “changes in federal funding will almost certainly change budgetary allocations” for UVA. These shifts could have long-term consequences for university leadership, tuition costs, and programming adjustments.

Beyond governance, a looming question is the fate of the federal Department of Education and its potential dismantling, a move that could significantly impact states’ roles in maintaining educational standards and funding. Elberson highlighted concerns over the transition, stating, “If there’s less federal oversight, there’s going to be a lot more dependence on states to help uphold what the Department of Education was doing.” The uncertainty around how funds will be redistributed leaves many institutions and students in limbo.

A major concern for higher education is how student loan programs would be affected if federal oversight diminishes. Elberson warned that privatization of student loans could “almost certainly, that is going to be terrible for borrowers” and would negatively impact the affordability of college. With millions already burdened by student debt, changes to loan structures and interest rates could further limit access to higher education, raising concerns about long-term economic effects on young professionals and families
