CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia basketball honored Tony Bennett on Saturday, pulling out one of its grittier wins of the season on the day the school named the court at John Paul Jones after the former coach.
With the game tied, freshman point guard Chance Mallory drew a foul on a 3-point attempt with 3.6 seconds to play, then sank all three attempts to lift the Cavaliers to an 86-83 win over Miami.
“Our guys continue to find ways to finish games,” UVA coach Ryan Odom said.
Jacari White came off the bench to score 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers, Sam Lewis added 15 and Thijs DeRidder scored 14. Mallory finished with 12, all in the second half.
White was 6 for 9 shooting, including going 5 for 8 from 3-point range.
Playing in front of a who’s who of Bennett era players, the current club ran its win streak to eight games, improving to 13-1 at home this season. It firmed up its grip on second place in the ACC, snapping the third-place Hurricanes’ winning streak at four.
Miami used a 17-2 run to quiet the home crowd and take a 24-13 lead with 9:26 left in the first half. That came despite UVA holding Miami star Malik Reneau to just two shots.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by White and Johann Grunloh put the Cavaliers ahead 31-30 with 5:15 left until halftime.
“There’s no 11-point play to bring us back,” White said. “It’s just chipping away.”
The Hurricanes surged ahead in the final minutes, scoring the last eight points of the half, to head to the locker room ahead 44-39, despite seven first-half 3-pointers by the home team.
Virginia played without forward Devin Tillis. Tillis, who missed the first four games of the season following a preseason knee injury. Tillis banged his knee in Wednesday’s win at Georgia Tech. That prompted coach Ryan Odom to shorten his bench, playing just eight players in the game.
But that didn’t seem to bother the ‘Hoos after the break.
The teams were tied 59-59 with 11:33 to play, but led by Mallory and DeRidder, the Cavaliers opened up their largest lead of the game, a 68-61 edge with 8:54 to go.
Miami battled back to go ahead 71-70 on a basket by Reneau with 5:27 left, setting up the dramatic, back-and-forth finish.
Dallin Hall’s only basket of the game, a driving reverse layup with 1:56 to play, followed by White’s fifth 3-pointer of the day, put UVA ahead 83-79 with 1:11 to play.
Tied 83-83, Mallory took the inbounds pass and raced up the floor, elevating for a 3-point attempt and drawing the foul.
“We can’t put ourselves in position for that to happen,” Miami coach Jai Lucas said, who added that he wanted to call timeout before that final UVA possession, but couldn’t get to an official.
