CHARLOTTSVILLE (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Initially created off Grounds in 1975 because a religious group could not house on Grounds, the Center for Christian Study in a large house at 128 Chancellor Street is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Executive Director Bill Wilder says make no mistake about it now, the organization enjoys a great relationship with the University administration, and they have a lot of space and activities. They started in a rented house in 1975 on a small house on Elliewood, and found the house on Chancellor built in 1926 and purchased and have since expanded to 17,000 square feet.

A big day Saturday with events all day surrounding the anniversary, but Wilder says this is a place with programs going on all the time, as well as NOT. There’s always coffee on in the kitchen where students can also refrigerate and/or prepare food.

“Students can come and hang out and do sort of social studying, they can hang out, they can play games. We also have a place in the back of the building for quiet study in the library, and then we have a variety of different programs with small groups and lectures.”
