ORIGINAL:

Charlottesville City Manager Sam Sanders has ordered the city to begin level 1 snow operations which affects a number of things in the city and in particular your vehicle.  In order to effectively remove snow from some of the main streets in the city, the City Manager has designated certain streets “emergency snow routes” and all private vehicles must be removed from those streets by 1:00p.m. Tuesday.  The city news release is below:

City Manager Samuel Sanders, Jr. has approved the designation of Level 1 Snow Operations in preparation for the forecasted inclement weather to affect the City beginning Tuesday, February 11th, 2025. He has also activated the designated Emergency Snow Routes effective at 1:00pm on Tuesday, February 11th. All vehicles should be removed from these areas by 1:00pm February 11th and will be subject to towing if still present after 1:00pm. This is based on the Public Works team’s assessment of the incoming storm projected to have an impact from early Tuesday, February 11th through Wednesday, February 12th, with widespread forecasts calling for snow accumulations of seven (7) inches or more.

 Designated Emergency Snow Routes include:

  • Market Street (Old Preston Avenue to 9th Street NE)
  • High Street (Preston Avenue to 9th Street NE)
  • Water Street (Ridge Street to 10th Street NE)
  • 2nd Street W (Market Steet to Water Street)
  • 4th Street E (Market Street to Water Street)
  • West Main Street (Ridge Street to JPA)
  • University Avenue (JPA to Rugby Road)

Designation of these Emergency Snow Routes increases the ease and safety of snow removal operations by removing vehicular and parking obstructions, allowing City plow operators to more effectively and efficiently clear these streets for travel. Traditionally, these streets have increased amounts of on-street parking and smaller travel dimensions, which can create difficulties when removing and clearing snow.

Parking will be free at Market and Water Street garages on Tuesday, February 11th and Wednesday, February 12th or for the duration of the inclement weather event.
