Carolyn Mitchelson Childress, 92, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on July 28, 2024.

Born November 2, 1931, in Miami, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late Paul Ballard Mitchelson and Edna White Mitchelson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of over 70 years, Howard William “Bill” Childress, and her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Fleming of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Carolyn was an active member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, now Pantops Community Church, and served the Branchlands community. Most of all she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her sons, James Michael Childress and his wife Barbara Payne of Free Union, Virginia, and Paul William Childress and his wife Leslie Dunning Childress of Cary, North Carolina; grandchildren, Alice Childress Daniels of Bali, Indonesia, Theresa Childress Ward of Garner, North Carolina, Evan Strauss Childress of Washington, Virginia, and David Alan Childress of Cary, North Carolina; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pantops Community Church.
