Carol Spence Muntz died peacefully in her sleep on March 29, 2024, at the age of 94. Born in New York, N.Y. on December 16, 1929, Carol grew up in Manhattan. She attended the Lincoln School in New York, the George School in Newtown, Pa. and was a member of the Bennington College class of 1951. She worked for the Central Intelligence Agency from 1951 until 1980; after her retirement, she worked independently as a tutor. In July 1971, Carol married Donald Muntz in Englewood, N.J., and they were happily married for 47 years until Donald’s death in 2018. They traveled extensively around the world; enjoyed reading, cooking, and outdoor sports, especially tennis; and were well-versed in the political and cultural moment. Carol and Donald were the center of every party they attended and were happiest when surrounded by friends, family, and caregivers. They lived in Hollin Hills, Va. for many years before moving to University Village in Charlottesville, Va. in 2006.
In recent years, Carol would continue to expand her knowledge and education. She completed her studies and received a certificate from the Education for Ministry School of Theology while attending St. Paul’s Memorial Church. She also completed various courses offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute through the University of Virginia. Carol also continued to stay active by participating in Tai Chi, yoga, and most recently as a member of ACAC Pilates classes. She especially enjoyed bonding with friends playing her favorite game, Mahjong.
Carol is survived by six nieces and nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, and one great-grandniece. Friends wishing to honor her life are invited to donate to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad (rescue1.org) or a favorite charity in her name.
Condolences maybe sent to the family on the Tribute Wall.
