Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – November is National Family Caregivers Month, and the Alzheimer’s Association is focusing on honoring and supporting those who care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Emily Rosenberger, constituent events manager for the local chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association, shared insights into the challenges caregivers face and how the community can help.
“Caregivers are superheroes in my mind,” said Rosenberger, emphasizing the emotional and physical toll caregiving can take. She highlighted the sacrifices caregivers make, noting that the role extends far beyond just helping with memory loss, as Alzheimer’s disease progresses to affect mobility and behavior. “It’s tough,” Rosenberger added. “Alzheimer’s disease is not meant to be taken on alone.”
As the holiday season approaches, Rosenberger offered practical advice on how to support caregivers during this stressful time. “Start with checking in,” she recommended. adding that it’s easy to send a message like, call me if you need anything.
The Alzheimer’s Association is also encouraging community involvement through events like the “Longest Day” campaign, which aligns with the winter solstice. “We take it upon ourselves to use it as an extra way to connect with the community and shine light on Alzheimer’s disease,” said Rosenberger.
For those needing support, the Alzheimer’s Association provides a 24/7 helpline at 800-272-3900, available throughout the holiday season.
