Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville’s Camp Holiday Trails is celebrating its 51st year serving children with medical needs and their families through year-round programming. Located on Fontaine near Trinity Presbyterian Church, the nonprofit has become a cornerstone for families across the Mid-Atlantic seeking inclusive camp experiences. “Camp Holiday Trails is a year-round nonprofit camp. We work with kids with medical needs and their siblings,” said Executive Director Tina LaRoche on Morning. News. “I know people think camp means summer, but for us it means 12 months of programs.”
As part of their continued mission, Camp Holiday Trails now offers its summer camp at a dramatically reduced fee, just $100 per week, compared to the actual cost of $2,000. “Last year our board and staff met and said, hey, let’s do something… so our summer camp is now offered for just $100,” LaRoche explained. Despite the cost difference, camp programs are in high demand, thanks to the personalized care, medically trained staff, and family-centered approach that make it possible for children to feel empowered and safe.
The organization will host its annual “Hope Grows” fundraiser on Sunday, May 11 at King Family Vineyards to help support these initiatives. The family-friendly event includes pony rides, crafts, food, and a heartfelt talk from a camper and their parent. “We have a camper and his mom who are going to be speaking. And I tell you, if you don’t feel a little emotion after that…” LaRoche shared. With strong community support, Camp Holiday Trails continues to ensure every child, regardless of medical circumstance, can feel like just a kid at camp.
