Calvin Leroy Roberts, Sr. (90) born March 5, 1934, went to be with his Savior on December 17, 2024 after an extended illness. He passed at the home of his daughter in Winchester, Va.

He is survived by his children Calvin L. Roberts Jr. of Bucyrus Kan., Wanda Sue Roberts of Winchester, Va; his beloved sister Dorothy (Polly) M. Roberts of Pittsburg, Pa.; former spouse and friend Shirley H. Roberts of Charlottesville; and numerous neices and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Fred E. Roberts Sr. and Dorothy E. Roberts; his precious sister Rosa Mae Thacker; and brothers Fred E. Roberts Jr. and Ronald R. Roberts (infant); and his loving mother in law Vandelia W. Herring.

He owned and operated Roberts Wallcovering and Painting of Charlottesville for over 4 decades. He retired at age 80 but continued to do volunteer work throughout the community until illness struck at age 88.

Calvin quietly but powerfully loved Jesus. His life was his testimony for his love as demonstrated by his numerous mission trips to help build new churches, Ronald McDonald Houses, and restore communities that needed a helping hand. His most cherished trips were alongside Rev. Virgil Casey to West Virginia and later to Bronx, New York.

He was a longtime member of Belmont Baptist Church, Northside Baptist Church, and Laurel Hill Baptist Church. He served as usher, Sunday School teacher, Royal Ambassador leader, deacon, chairman of deacons, trustee, and assisted with transportation on church trips.

His favorite past time was “piddling” in his garage, daily breakfast at the Spudnut with the Belmont Boys, attending Southern Bluegrass Gospel concerts and eating apple pie and ice cream.

Calvin served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War aboard the USS Cronin in the gunnery division. He was honorably discharged.

Upon his entry to heaven, after meeting his Savior he was greeted by cherished friends and loving family: Vandelia Herring who loved him like he was more than a son in law… but rather her own son, his brother in law Leslie Cason, his best friend of 10 plus years Bob Young, Paul Scott, Allen Dillard, Howard Carden, and Pete Belew. What a glorious reunion they had!
