RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW/AP) – Virginia lawmakers have wrapped up their 60-day legislative session by approving a two-year state budget that includes pay raises for teachers and state employees. The budget approved Saturday also increases education funding and expands the state sales to tax to cover digital services. Notably missing from the budget is one of Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s achieve one of his top priorities… a $2-billion development district with a new arena to lure the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals to Alexandria.
The project would give Virginia its first major pro sports teams since the ABA’s Virginia Squires in the ’70s.
As the session came toward an end, Charlottesville Democrat Katrina Callsen was named by her fellow 1st-year legislators the Freshman Legislator of the Year. Chosen from among 34 freshmen across both caucuses, she ushered through the most bills of them all during the session.
