RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Buckingham County’s was one of six superintendents invited to share successes in what was an otherwise mixed National Association of Educational Procurement report card for Virginia from testing in January 2024. State Superintendent Lisa Coons announced Wednesday morning Virginia in the middle-of-the-pack of states with Virginia 4th-grade reading scores not changing from 2022 while the nation dropped 2-points… and both Virginia and national scores were plus-2 in math. 8th-grade Virginians, unfortunately dropped 4-points in reading while the nation dropped 2 from 2022, while Virginia math scores dropped 4-points compared to the nation’s minus-1.
As for what went right, Buckingham superintendent John Keeler says they grew 16-points in some areas, in part, by using state All-In funding to adjust schedules. He said where they had a 4-by-4 in middle school, they’ve done a 7-period school day and created targeted tutoring time during the school day… not just before and after school. He says they also joined a comprehensive instructional program to assure lessons and assessments are fully aligned.
