UDATED 5/14 6:15AM: Flooding and severe thunderstorms wreaking havoc all over the area Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Warnings started early evening Tuesday with creek and steam flooding, and flooding of low-lying areas from torrential rains. Albemarle Police have posted on social media if you see flooding on a roadway, turn around and don’t drown.
The worst has happened near Crozet where Albemarle Police and Fire Rescue were searching into the night for a 12-year old boy swept away by flood waters shortly before 5:30pm near Newtown Road and Valley Green Drive. The child was reportedly walking in that area when waters swollen from a nearby creek washed him off his feet. A search was called off shortly before 9pm due to lack of visibility from dark and continued torrential rains. The search resuming this morning at daybreak.
Roads were increasingly closing through the night especially in Greene and Madison counties, with a few closed in Albemarle. The list could grow as streams and creeks receive more storm runoff from upstream. Click 511Virginia.org and go to the Road Reports tab at the top menu, and selection “Road Conditions” from the dropdown to see the roads affected and/or closed from weather conditions.
