CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – Book Baskets, established in 1995, is a local nonprofit organization committed to providing new and gently used books to children in Central Virginia who might not otherwise have books of their own. By ensuring that all children have personal libraries, Book Baskets aims to instill a love of reading and encourage lifelong learning.
Mission and Impact
The organization’s mission is to distribute books to children through various school programs and social service agencies in Central Virginia. In 2023 alone, Book Baskets donated over 22,000 books, reflecting its dedication to fostering literacy and education in the community.
Operations and Distribution
Initially, Book Baskets collected books in wicker baskets placed in over 19 public and private schools, which inspired its name. Today, the organization primarily purchases books at discounted rates through grants from programs like First Book and Scholastic, supplemented by local and national organizational grants and community book drives.
In 2019, Book Baskets relocated to a larger space at 400 Albemarle Square Shopping Center, where volunteers store, rejuvenate, sort, and pack books for delivery to children. The organization targets groups where 70% or more of the children qualify for free or reduced lunches, distributing books through local social service agencies and educational programs. Over the past several years, Book Baskets has consistently donated more than 20,000 books annually to children in the community.
