The contamination was identified after a customer reported an illness in a litter of puppies, prompting testing by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS). The FDA confirmed the positive Salmonella results on November 27, 2024.

Salmonella can cause serious health issues in both pets and humans. Symptoms in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramping. Pets infected with Salmonella may experience lethargy, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Pet owners who observe these symptoms in their animals after consuming the product are urged to contact a veterinarian.

Consumers who purchased the recalled Puppy Mix should return it to the place of purchase or dispose of it in a way that ensures it is inaccessible to children, pets, or wildlife. Pet food bowls, utensils, and storage containers that came into contact with the product should be thoroughly sanitized.
