Bert was a lifelong horseman, he began as a jumper rider and while stationed in Germany, the intricacy of dressage sparked a passion. He was an apt student and developed into a complete rider and coach.
Bert’s love for the sport led Bert and Elizabeth to Germany, where they acquired top stallions and trained with Europe’s finest. Bert’s favorite stallion was Worldly, who garnered many awards as a competition and breeding stallion.
When their adventures in Germany ended, Bert and Elizabeth returned home to Linden Lane Farm, where Bert continued to train Elizabeth on several Grand Prix horses.
Bert enjoyed every aspect of farm life and the outdoors, often on his tractor or with his dog Skippy.
Along with his devotion to family, Lieutenant Colonel Page, US Army (retired), put service to his country on the top of his priorities. His early adult life was devoted to giving back as a proud officer and leader in the US Army – to include extended service (two tours) under fire in Vietnam. His 23 years of service was captured in citations that accompanied awards of the Silver Star for heroism, Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts for severe injuries sustained in battle.
Representative of these awards was the Silver Star where, as Senior Advisor to a Vietnamese Regional Forces Group in 1969, Captain Bert Page lead the team into “vicious house-to-house fighting,” …. where he “was continually exposed to hostile gunfire in attempts to encourage his Vietnamese comrades to help destroy the entrenched enemy.” Captain Page’s severe wounds from this action eventually lead to a medical retirement.
Bert was preceded in death by Elizabeth Waterman Page (Mother), Spencer Gross (Godfather), Elizabeth Ann Gilbert (Sister), and Dewitt C. Page (Brother).
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Page, Keswick, VA, Antje Miller of McHenry Il, daughter Annette Page of Raleigh NC, son, Spencer Page of Arlington, VA grandson, Kevin Wallace of Los Angeles, CA, granddaughter, Rena Page Wallace of Denver, CO, and granddaughter’s, Margaret Jos Page and Maya Rose Page of Arlington, VA.
