Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – After more than 40 years, Charlottesville’s beloved Blue Moon Diner will close its doors on November 27. Simon Davidson of Charlottesville 29 joined Cville Right Now Live to discuss the significance of this Main Street landmark. “Blue Moon Diner really is an institution,” Davidson noted, underscoring its role as a cultural hub that “sustained just like the feel and the culture of the place” through various ownerships and community changes over the decades.
Founded in 1979 by Buzz White, Blue Moon Diner was created to offer “a place for a diverse crowd to enjoy good food without spending an arm and a leg”—a mission it’s fulfilled since day one. Current owners Laura Galgano and Rice Hall announced that the coming weeks will be a celebration, inviting patrons to savor their final meals and favorite menu items before the diner’s final farewell. Davidson encouraged locals to visit while they still can, reflecting on Blue Moon’s ability to make everyone feel at home.
In addition to honoring a Charlottesville staple, Davidson spotlighted Corey Hoffman, a rising talent in the local beer scene and founder of Neon Culture Brewing. Known for his inventive brews and collaborations with established breweries, Hoffman has debuted three new imperial stouts at Högwaller Brewing, part of an ongoing series to support hurricane relief efforts. “You can get a good idea about what kind of reputation he has given the willingness of local brewers to collaborate,” Davidson shared, noting Hoffman’s fresh approach and growing reputation in Charlottesville’s craft beer community.
