Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The landscape of collegiate athletics is undergoing a seismic transformation, raising questions about the balance between athletic success and educational integrity. The emergence of multimillion-dollar NIL deals and the increasing commercialization of college sports have added new complexities to the traditional role of student-athletes.

Ed Burton, an economics professor with over 50 years in academia, weighed in on the issue, emphasizing the importance of education in shaping student-athletes’ futures. “The minute they walk on grounds, I feel like it’s our responsibility to educate them,” Burton stated, highlighting the university’s duty to prioritize academics regardless of how students enter through athletics or other portals.

Reflecting on past decades, Burton recalled a time when athletes successfully balanced academic rigor with their athletic commitments, highlighting examples like Matt Schaub and his teammates who pursued demanding majors such as economics while excelling in sports.

However, Burton acknowledged the shifting priorities in modern athletics, where financial incentives often take precedence. Despite these changes, he remains steadfast in his belief: “Every child can get an education. I don’t think there’s anybody that has ever attended the University of Virginia that we can’t improve their future and improve what their life chances are by providing more education.”
