WASHINGTON, DC (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Former Greene County Commonwealth’s Attorney Matt Hardin is asking for a state and federal investigation into treasury issues in then-Delegate John McGuire’s campaign. A letter from Hardin to the U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia and Goochland County Commonwealth’s Attorney questions whether McGuire used a deceased person as treasurer of Friends of John McGuire in 2021 and ’22 in violation, at least, of state law. Hardin says it’s also possible the person actually handling treasurer duties at that time was in Wisconsin, while state law requires someone doing so be a registered Virginia voter.
Hardin, who has opened a law firm in DC, notes state law requires a campaign name a new treasurer within 10 days after a death, and campaign finance reports continued to list the deceased as the treasurer for 10 months after his death.
