Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Alzheimer’s Association is celebrating its dedicated volunteers during Global Volunteer Month with its first-ever appreciation event in Lynchburg. “Our volunteers are the heart of our organization,” said Sherry Owen of the Alzheimer’s Association. “It was called the Power of Purple… it was amazing,” she added, reflecting on the April 16 event where volunteers with up to 15 years of service were honored. Awards such as the Memory Maker, Ally in Hope, Legacy Leadership, and Champion for a Cause were presented to outstanding individuals and organizations.

The organization continues to expand its reach across the region, including Danville, Harrisonburg, Roanoke, and Charlottesville. Owen highlighted the emotional impact of recognizing volunteers, noting how recipients brought friends and family to share in the moment. “It was really special… It was an emotional event,” she said. The chapter’s work relies heavily on these volunteers to carry out their mission across Western and Southern Virginia.

Looking ahead, Owen encouraged the public to get involved in the Alzheimer’s Association’s upcoming events, including The Longest Day in June and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Charlottesville on October 26. “There are still plenty of opportunities to volunteer,” she emphasized. From organizing games and rides to launching fundraising teams, the organization welcomes any form of creative participation to support its cause.
