CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Albemarle County staff has begun working on priorities they’d like the General Assembly to provide help from the state with. Interim Economic Development Director Emily Kilroy asks the Board of Supervisors if they’re interested in asking the state for $1.37-milion to build a trail segment that would provide access directly from Southwood and connect Biscuit Run Park to the future Monacan Indian Nation Tribute Park. She also suggests the county seek $11.2-million from the state for more site preparation for Rivanna Futures. She says 650-feet of road, and 4650-feet of water and sewer pipes to provide minimum level this money would pay for would shorten the development timeline from years to months.
Interim County Attorney Andy Herrick suggests still another shot at allowing Albemarle County a referendum on a 1-cent sales tax hike to finance school construction. That’s legislation both chambers of the General Assembly passed this year but was vetoed by Governor Youngkin and was upheld by failure to override “by a razor thin margin”. Herrick also suggests another shot at legislation that didn’t make it out of a General Assembly committee last session — expanding speed cameras to roads localities identify as having big speeding problems.
