CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Albemarle school employees have overwhelmingly approved the Albemarle Education Association as their representative in new collective bargaining with the county. Preliminary results from the election show that over 82% of licensed staff and more than 55% of ESP employees participated in the vote. An AEA release says, “Four years after collective bargaining legislation was passed by the Virginia legislature, Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) employees cleared a final hurdle to gain the right to collectively bargain. Last week, a decisive majority of ACPS staff selected the Albemarle Education Association (AEA) as their bargaining agent. The AEA is now poised to begin negotiating contracts with the division for more than 2,500 employees. Better pay rates and pay schedules, protected planning time, and improved leave policies are all high on the priority list.”
