Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Albemarle High School teacher Rich Lindsay joined WINA Morning News to discuss the Patriots boys basketball team’s historic run for a state championship. The team, led by coach Greg Maynard, will face Green Run this afternoon at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond. “They’ve knocked on the door,” Lindsay said, referencing the team’s near-misses in previous years. “We lost in that heartbreaker last year on the last-second three against L. C. Bird and got revenge on them in the region final.”
Lindsay, who has taught at Albemarle for 27 years, highlighted the talent on this year’s team, which boasts a 22-3 record. He credited players like Isaiah Harris, whom he described as the team’s “field general,” and MarJaylen Jackson, who has been a game-changer in the paint. “There’s six or seven guys that can do what they need to do,” he said. With Green Run known for its speed and athleticism, Lindsay emphasized the importance of handling their press and capitalizing on open opportunities.
As he prepares to cheer on the Patriots, he noted the strong school and community support for the team. “We’re going to turn that town, Richmond red, white, and blue,” he emphasized. The championship game marks Albemarle’s first appearance in a state title matchup in 77 years, making it a momentous occasion for the school and its supporters.
