CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As summer kicks off and families head outdoors, Albemarle County Fire Rescue is urging the community to stay vigilant about water and heat safety. Captain Gilbert Monroe emphasized the importance of knowing your environment when swimming, noting the differences between still and moving water. “If you get down there and you can see the water is just moving along, it’s probably not the best time to get in it and try to swim,” Monroe said.

In addition to water safety, Monroe stressed the value of CPR training, encouraging at least one family member to be certified. “Someone needs to call 911 immediately, and CPR started, thats going to help first responders and that person with a better outcome if we have someone there trained” he explained. The department offers hands-only CPR classes through the county to help prepare residents for emergencies.

Monroe also addressed the dangers of heat-related illnesses during outdoor activities. He advised residents to hydrate days in advance and watch for warning signs like muscle cramps and the absence of sweating. “Normally when you stop sweating, it means you’re dehydrated… your body temperature is going to raise a lot quicker,” he warned.
