Albemarle County, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Albemarle County Fire Rescue’s Captain Rueben Cowles joined a WINA Morning News to discuss essential Thanksgiving safety measures, particularly in the kitchen. With Thanksgiving around the corner, Captain Cowles emphasized the frequency of kitchen fires during the holiday season, urging vigilance.

Captain Cowles emphasized that distraction is a significant contributor to fire incidents and should be carefully avoided. “Having multiple things cooking at the same time… stepping out of the kitchen… you’ve got a potholder or kitchen towel near the stove, and it’s too close to the burner and it catches fire. That does happen often.”

Deep-frying turkeys, a holiday favorite, can also pose significant risks. “We highly recommend that your turkey fryer is outdoors on a level surface, away from anything flammable,” he advised. “Before you put your turkey in again, make sure that it is dry and completely thawed.

For families with children, Captain Cowles suggested preparing ingredients ahead of time and keeping toys, loose clothing, and flammable items away from cooking areas. He also stressed turning pot handles inward to prevent accidents.
