August 7, 2024, News Release

Severe weather is expected in our area between Thursday night and Saturday morning from Tropical Storm Debby. Currently, the National Weather Service predicts heavy rainfall, bringing the potential for considerable flooding, and hazardous winds, bringing the potential for isolated tornadoes.

We urge our community to have a storm preparedness plan in place to ensure the best possible outcome during a severe weather event.

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to sign up for emergency alerts through the Charlottesville-UVA-Albemarle Emergency Communications Center. By opting in to receive severe weather alerts, this emergency alert system will inform you of local severe weather watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service.

Be Prepared and Informed

Make and Practice an Evacuation Plan

  • Develop and practice an evacuation plan ahead of a severe weather event.
  • Include a plan for pets.
  • Add transportation routes and destinations to your plan.
  • Prepare an emergency supplies kit for both family members and pets ahead of time to take with you.

Check local news and/or radio broadcasts for evacuation alerts and be prepared to evacuate when authorities tell you to do so. If you are evacuated, do not return to your home until local authorities say it is safe.
