Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As a winter storm approaches with expected snowfall between six to ten inches, Albemarle County Fire Rescue (ACFR) is urging residents to take necessary precautions. Assistant Fire Marshal Captain Makaiah Ledford emphasized the importance of preparation, advising residents to stock up on essentials and ensure generators are safely positioned. “If you don’t have to go into town, if the roads are bad, don’t get out there and try to drive,” Ledford said. “Stay off the roads if you can, allow the plows to open up the roadways… just be very mindful and kind.”

In addition to the severe weather, Virginia’s 4:00 PM Burn Law, that runs February 15 through April 30, is a key concern for fire officials. The law restricts open-air burning before 4:00 PM to prevent the spread of wildfires during the dry, windy months. “Essentially, what we’re saying… is no open-air burning is allowed before 4:00 PM, especially if the fire is within 300 feet of woods or dry grass that could spread fire,” Ledford explained. He noted that despite recent precipitation, high winds can quickly dry out vegetation, making conditions ripe for fires.

ACFR has also responded to several house fires in recent weeks, highlighting the need for fire safety precautions at home. “It could be anything resulting from a kitchen fire where it’s unattended cooking… it could be something where, you know, you discard some ash from the fireplace, and you need to be mindful where you discard it.,” Ledford said. He advised residents to maintain heating sources properly and keep space heaters at least three feet away from combustible materials. As the winter storm and fire risks increase, ACFR continues to stress the importance of safety and preparedness throughout the region.
