CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a heartfelt discussion about community safety, Albemarle County Fire Rescue’s Captain Gilbert Monroe shared critical advice on water safety. Speaking on the importance of first responders, Jay James expressed deep gratitude for their service, emphasizing their role in public safety. “We’re so grateful for them because without them, we just don’t have public safety.”

Captain Monroe highlighted the dangers of drowning, particularly among children, noting it as the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for ages 1 to 14. He emphasized the importance of swimming in designated swimming areas, avoiding distractions, and always having a buddy when in the water. Additionally, he talked about the necessity of life-saving equipment and knowing CPR. Monroe emphasized, “Just knowing how to do CPR and rescue breathing will literally save someone’s life.”

In the event of a water emergency, Monroe advised against putting oneself at risk and recommended using items like life rings or floaties to assist victims. He also recommended parents to ensure their children learn how to swim, which can significantly reduce the risk of drowning.

With the summer heat driving people to lakes and rivers, Captain Monroe’s timely advice serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of water safety.
