CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – If the weekend’s forecasted inclement weather forces school closings next week, Albemarle County Public Schools said any more than two missed days will result in an adjustment to the calendar, the division announced Friday.

If school is closed for a day or two, no changes will be needed, since the division builds in days over the state requirements to allow for weather or other closings.

However, if ACPS schools are closed for three days, the Feb. 17 professional development day will become a regular school day.

If they’re closed for four days, the Feb. 16 teacher workday and the Feb. 17 teacher workday will be regular school days.

And if schools are forced to close all five days of the week, March 19, currently a mandatory training/teacher work time, will be converted to a regular school day, in addition to the February dates.

“We know that changes to the school calendar can disrupt family routines and plans,” said Superintendent Dr. Matthew Haas in a statement. “Safety remains our top priority, and this approach allows us to balance that responsibility with our commitment to student learning during winter weather.”

The release noted the school system every year adopts a calendar “with 11.5 days of instructional time beyond state requirements to account for weather-related closures and other emergencies.”

They’ve used four so far this academic year, which leaves 7.5 days.

ACPS aims to maintain at least five available instructional days through early February to accommodate potential weather closures through the remainder of winter, while also preserving flexibility in the event of flooding or other emergencies later in the school year,” the release said. “With that goal in mind, ACPS is notifying families, students and staff of its plan to make up instructional days in February and March if schools are closed for more than two days over the next four weeks.”
