CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Old Ivy bridge was struck Monday by “a dump truck hauling excavation equipment on a trailer,” according to an Albemarle County Police spokesperson.

“ACPD has identified a suspect vehicle and driver,” spokesperson Logan Bogert told Cville Right Now. “It remains an active investigation, and charges are possible at the conclusion of that investigation.”

Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson Alexis Mehretab told Cville Right Now on Wednesday that there was no timetable for the bridge, which runs over the 29 bypass, to re-open, saying it will remain closed “until further notice.”

The bridge was already undergoing repairs prior to Monday’s incident and was closed to westbound traffic. The accident caused Route 29 to be shut down in both directions for nearly seven hours.
