Albemarle County, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Abbey Stumpf, Director of Communications for Albemarle County, appeared on WINA Morning News to discuss the county’s recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene’s remnants and preparations for the school year. Stumpf emphasized safety amid ongoing flooding concerns, reminding the public of the importance of emergency preparedness and road safety, particularly the “turn around, don’t drown” message.
She also touched on the county’s back-to-school initiatives, including distributing supplies to programs like Bright Stars. These efforts aim to support students and families in need as they transition back to school, ensuring everyone is equipped for a successful year.
She also addressed the county’s recent decision to implement speed cameras near Albemarle High School to improve student safety. The program is still in its warning phase, but Stumpf shared a startling statistic: “In the first four weeks, we had over 4,000 incidents of confirmed speeding in that area.” Starting October 21, citations will be issued to speeding drivers in school zones, with fines reaching $100.
Stumpf mentioned the upcoming county board meeting, which will focus on transportation projects, including the Ivy Road corridor study. This project is part of the county’s broader efforts to improve infrastructure and ensure safe, efficient transportation for the community.
