FREDERICKSBURG, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A dozen people were arrested at the University of Mary Washington over the weekend after an encampment on the campus broken up Friday night was re-erected Saturday. UMW police officers — with state troopers also present — went to Jefferson Square early Saturday evening and started making arrests after students from Students for Justice In Palestine re-staked their tents that afternoon.
In a statement, the University President Troy Paino wrote, “Attendees were told on Friday afternoon that they could stay through the duration of the event as long as they adhered to University policies, as well as state laws and regulations.” “As the event evolved and an invitation extended the encampment to the public to stay on campus, additional safety and security concerns emerged.”
“After some time, 12 individuals remained in Jefferson Square and were arrested for trespassing, including 9 students.”
