AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A plea hearing has been set for the twin brother of Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith, who was accused of trying to kill two deputies on December 26, 2023, before the charges were amended to attempted malicious assault.
According to online records, Ronald William Smith is expected to enter a plea on July 24 in Augusta County General District Court. His indictment was handed down on Friday, May 24, 2024.
Smith, 41, faces five charges in connection with the incident. Authorities claim that he stole a semi-truck from Sheriff Smith’s property and led deputies on a chaotic chase.
During a recent hearing, two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer were reduced to attempted malicious assault. Smith is also accused of property destruction and eluding police.
Smith remains in custody at Middle River Regional Jail.
