There were high fives and cheers as the 9th annual WINA Cares for Kids Radiothon benefitting UVA Health Children’s Hospital wrapped up at 6pm on Thursday. The Charlottesville-area community came through in a huge way, with hundreds of people calling and texting donations on May 15 and 16, helping raise a total of $82,091. The sum beat this year’s goal and is a record for the event in its ninth year.
UVA Health Children’s treated more than 109,000 children in 2023 for issues ranging from injuries to life-threatening illnesses that can’t be treated elsewhere. The money helps the hospital create a welcoming environment for children and their families and provides for needs that aren’t covered by insurance, including accommodations so that families can stay nearby as their child receives treatment.
“It’s a small undertaking with a huge impact for the children and families in our community,” said Charlottesville Radio Group Operations Manager Paul McDaniel. “The fact that every dollar stays local is important to us, as our mission statement is “Give where you live.”
