NEWPORT NEWS (WINAWAVY) – Ruckersville native Abby Zwerner — the first grade teacher shot by one of her 1st-graders at Rich Neck Elementary School — is no longer employed by Newport News City Schools. The question is was she fired or did she resign?

One of Abby’s attorneys, Jeffrey Breit showed WAVY TV an email dated May 22 that “NNPS has processed a separation of employment effective the close of business 06/12/23”. Breit said this cannot be read any other way “than you’ve been fired”.

However, Newport News Schools contends Abby submitted her intention to Human Resources back in March that she intended to resign effective the end of her contract June 12. They say the email they sent in May was confirmation of her intention.

Breit said “to be shocked is an understatement”… and that they have litigation and Abby hasn’t been paid in a couple of months… and accuses the school system of trying to squeeze her.
