RICHMOND (WINA) – State Attorney General Jason Miyares has joined his Attorney General colleague in Tennessee with a lawsuit against the NCAA claiming their NIL policies violate anti-trust law. This after the University of Tennessee has reportedly been advised of an NCAA investigation into possible Level 1 and Level 2 violations that its official NIL collective — Spyre Sports Group — used NIL in trying to lure recruits. Currently, the NCAA prohibits prospective student-athletes from discussing potential NIL opportunities with schools and collectives prior to enrolling.
The suit by Miyares and Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti asserts “the NCAA’s restrictions on the ability of current and future student-athletes to negotiate and benefit from their Name, Image, and Likeness rights (NIL) violate federal antitrust law and is harmful to current and future student-athletes.”
Miyares states “student-athletes should have more freedom over negotiating and earning money for their skills and ability.
