CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Figures show an increase in certain types of crime at the University of Virginia. The report is filed under the Clery Act, a federal mandate that requires colleges to disclose crime information. The Cavalier Daily reports there was an increase in rape, aggravated assault and motor vehicle theft in 2022 compared to 2021.

In 2021, a total of 40 sexual assault-related cases were reported, and that went down to 35 in 2022, a 13% decline. Seventeen counts of rape were reported in 2022 after 15 were reported in 2021.

Aggravated assault reports increased by 171% – 38 in 2022 compared to 14 in 2021.

Motor vehicle thefts jumped from 19 in 2021 to 106 in 2022. UVA officials tell the Cav Daily a key reason for the jump is the higher number of mopeds, motorized bikes and scooters on Grounds.

Four hate crimes were reported in 2022, three cases of intimidation based on race and one aggravated assault based on race. Four were also reported in each of the two previous years.
