CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – University of Virginia football coach Tony Elliott starting his post-practice press conference Thursday with condolences hitting too close to home… the death of a player. Liberty announced the death Monday of 19-year old freshman offensive lineman Tajh Boyd over the weekend, but did not say how. A spokesperson for Lynchburg Police said they did look into Boyd’s death and determined a criminal investigation is not necessary.
Graduating from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Boyd enrolled at Liberty in January. A Tuesday media availability by Liberty football coach Jamey Chadwell was cancelled, and he’ll meet with media Friday.
Elliott said, “I’ve been through it, and there’s no playbook for it. I’ve already texted, reached out to, Coach Chadwell. Known him for awhile, he’s an awesome man, he’s fully prepared to take them through these circumstances. I just know how hard it’s going to be for those guys.”
