VA BEACH, VA (WINA) – Emergency officials estimate some 50-to-100 homes are damaged this morning from a tornado that ripped through Virginia Beach Sunday evening. Tornado warnings were issued around 6:15 for the resort city, and there are numerous videos showing a large funnel cloud touching down in the Great Neck area. One video taken from across Broad Bay shows debris being thrown in the air.
The City Manager has declared a state of emergency this morning, and the rest of Sunday’s Something In the Water festival was cancelled. No one is reported hurt, and crews are out this morning assessing damage.
The National Weather Service in Wakefield confirmed quickly Sunday it was a tornado “based on the debris signature on radar, damage reports, and videos of the storm, we can confirm that there was a tornado. A survey will be conducted tomorrow to determine the rating.”
