CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WINA) – One of the six men charged in connection with the torch-lit march on University of Virginia Grounds has chosen to go on trial.
William Henry Fears IV was in court on Monday. The Pasadena, Texas, man is charged with burning an object with the intent to intimidate. Two of his alleged partners in crime have opted to plead guilty. Fears is the first to choose a trial, which is scheduled for Jan 3, 2024.
Late last month, Fears was taken to Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail from a Texas jail, where he was serving time for choking his girlfriend. He has also served time for kidnapping.
The court will now decide how many potential jurors will be called. There are typically 30 people in a jury pool, but Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Lawton Tufts says it could take more than 100 to insure an impartial jury.
