RICHMOND (WINA) – A Richmond federal court judge has thrown out a gun possession case in the city of Richmond saying Keith Rodney Moore was racially profiled when city police stopped him in December 2020. Richmond Police performed a traffic stop of Moore in the Highland Park neighborhood, then he fled the scene. Officers caught and arrested him, and ultimately found a gun in his car which led to indictment on possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
But Judge John Gibney’s 25-page opinion cites statistical evidence since the Commonwealth required police to keep track of the race of people stopped… data showing Richmond Police stop black drivers 5 times more often as white drivers.
He notes statewide data is similar, and Moore has successfully presented selective enforcement to have his indictment dismissed.
