The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) is reporting that damage occurred in one of its largest wastewater pumping facilities last week. High rain and wastewater flows damaged equipment in the Rivanna Pumping Station, located at 695 Moores Creek Lane, resulting in wastewater overflows in and around Riverview and Darden Towe Parks. The Rivanna Pumping Station receives about 6 million gallons of wastewater each day from the northern areas of the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County and has a maximum pumping capacity of 53 million gallons each day. RWSA staff and contractors, in coordination with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, responded immediately to continue services and minimize any impacts to the environment. Short and long-term repairs are underway to restore full operational capability of the facility.
RWSA Executive Director, Bill Mawyer, stated “Our staff and contractors have been working around the clock to maintain operation of this essential utility infrastructure and services to the community. We expect to complete initial repairs later this month, with final repairs to be completed later this year.”
