CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – The Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office announces multiple individuals indicted on a couple of charges involving the August 11, 2017 torchlight march on University of Virginia Grounds. Right now, the name of only one person appears on the Albemarle Circuit Court docket… Will Zachary Smith of Nocona, Texas. He was actually arrested in June 2018, but no court date was set until January of this year.

He’s now gone through pre-trial hearings on charges of “burning objects on public property to intimidate”… and “maliciously releasing gas”. Indictment on the “gas” charge was in 2018… but the “burning objects” charge was only indicted in February 2023. There’s a two-day trial scheduled in Albemarle Circuit Court for the 30th and 31st of May.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has not made public the names of others indicted, as they say these indictments were issued as part of an ongoing and active criminal investigation.
