RICHMOND (AP) – Virginia House Republicans are backing away from a previous request for a permanent individual tax rate reduction amid a long-running partisan impasse over the state’s spending plan. GOP Del. Barry Knight — who leads the Republican House budget efforts — made an offer to his Democratic Senate counterparts nearly two weeks ago, outlining a framework that would ditch the tax rate cut and spend more of the state’s multi-billion-dollar surplus on one-time tax rebates. That’s according to an outline of the offer obtained by The Associated Press.
Knight’s proposal also does not include a corporate tax cut proposed by Gov. Youngkin. Senate Democrats are expected to meet this week to discuss the proposal.
The budget impasse has dragged on since the start of the calendar year.
