CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – The Charlottesville School Board chose Thursday night to pause the renaming of Burnley-Moran and Johnson elementary schools in order to find more suitable names. Beth Baptist — who chairs the School Naming Committee — asked for commitment to change the names, but they want to do more thought in choosing new names.

Student representative Ju’Saun Johnson exhorted the board, though, to move forward on the renaming because students need it. He noted some of the people city schools were named for were not in support of him, and other minority races or groups, being in those buildings.

“It’s like being in a building which you were not invited in or were not wanted, and you didn’t know until you left… you aren’t going to feel good about that.”

Baptist says they’ve sent out surveys to the schools’ communities asking for name suggestions, and are getting them. They also want to inquire of the company helping with the new Strategic Plan to do work with school staffs to delve into naming.
