CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – City Council preliminarily passed a resolution to use federal COVID funds up to $4.2-million to purchase a parcel of land at 405 Avon and 405 Levy from CRHA for the purpose of some sort of facility that would incorporate shelter beds. City Manager Sam Sanders says nothing has been determined exactly what to build there, and that will be deliberated along with the community.
Sanders said there’s a lot of work in regards to the assessment of the needs in the community.
“At this moment, no one can tell me exactly how many beds we need in the city of Charlottesville, but we can all see the evidence there is a need for shelter beds in this community,” Sanders said.
Sanders continued, “We also have a temporary shelter facility that is only open during the winter months and homelessness is not seasonal.”
“We have to have a better response than that.”
Sanders suggested perhaps we can envision a Crossings 2-point-oh. This property, in fact, had been slated by CRHA for a Crossings 2… but was never built.
The item was moved to the consent agenda for final approval February 5.
