CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – City Council has approved a pilot program for speed cameras at three school zones which are activated when school zone speed limits are activated. Cameras will be installed on Monticello Avenue in the Clark Elementary school zones… and on Cherry Avenue at the Buford Middle and Johnson Elementary school zones.
Crossing guard Adrienne Dent read a letter on behalf of the city’s crossing guards saying vehicles speeding through these zones is an incessant problem. And, the letter continued with Charlottesville Police understaffed, they cannot with any consistency provide help in school zones.
Councilor JuanDiego Wade said while on the school board he would set at the Clark Elementary school zone, and see people speed through — even in that tight space — past buses with their stop arms up… and this gives mitigation of the issue “a fighting chance”.
