Charlottesville, Va. (WINA) – Charlottesville law enforcement officials are investigating whether the city school administration violated Virginia’s mandatory reporting law by failing to report an allegation of sexual assault in April.

A November 27, 2023, letter to School Superintendent Royal Gurley obtained by Charlottesville Right Now’s Courteney Stuart by way of a FOIA request, Police Chief Michael Kochis and Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania state that schools are required to report any such allegations to police and are not permitted to substitute independent investigations.

The letter came less than a week after former Coordinator of Safety and Security Regine Wright alleged on Charlottesville Right Now that school leadership had not reported a sexual assault. Gurley told Charlottesville Right Now that a Title IX officer had conducted a “thorough investigation” of the allegation and concluded it was not a sexual assault.
