Help us welcome our new Interim Executive Director, Sue Friedman!

Friedman currently serves on three nonprofit boards and brings a wealth of experience leading nonprofit organizations to the role. She most recently served at the Executive Director of the Jefferson School Foundation. Prior to that, she served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western Virginia for more than a decade.

“We are excited to welcome Sue Friedman as our Interim Executive Director,” said Jenn Corbey, Board President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. “Together we will work to ensure the wellbeing of our staff and continue to provide the highest level of care to the animals entrusted to us.”

Friedman’s focus will be on conducting an operational review, building culture, and continuing the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA’s mission of advancing the compassionate treatment of animals by providing sheltering, medical care, and behavioral services for dogs and cats; promoting permanent, caring homes; and furthering education and outreach.

“I look forward to working with the team of talented staff, Board members, volunteers, and community partners to enhance our ability to not only meet, but exceed, our commitments to animal welfare and our communities,” said Sue Friedman, Interim Executive Director of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. “As Board Chair Jenn Corbey stated, we will work together to fulfill our vision and mission.”

Friedman’s first day in the role will be Wednesday, May 24. She will serve as the Interim Executive Director while the Board initiates a comprehensive search for the new Executive Director.

The Board of Directors says farewell to Angie Gunter, who had served as the Executive Director of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA since 2017.
