January 31, 2024, News Release

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA – On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, Albemarle County Police Department’s Traffic Unit held two speed enforcement initiatives on the 250 bypass in the area of Fontaine Avenue and on U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) in the area of Rio Mills Road. These areas of Albemarle County have been identified as high traffic and high crash zones, respectively.

Using lidar speed checks, officers staged at locations across these roadways to stop vehicles identified as driving over the speed limit. The operation lasted three hours in each location.

In total, 123 vehicles were stopped for speeding and a total of 131 summons were issued. Out of the 123 stopped for speeding, 17 were driving more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.

These traffic stops are more than just simply handing out tickets. Officers use these traffic stops as educational opportunities when engaging with drivers to share why we take these infractions seriously.

ACPD would like to take this opportunity to remind the community that speeding endangers not just you, but everyone around you. Speeding increases the potential for loss of control as a driver, the likelihood of a rollover accident, and increases the severity of any resulting collision. While traveling on our county’s roadways, we encourage everyone to follow the rules of the road and slow down.
